Who Am I?
Why is that always such a difficult question to answer? As any introvert with streaks of extroversion knows, the struggle to answer this question is real. As someone that's behind the camera, standing in the spotlight is challenging to say the least. So let's get around the awkwardness of the "tell me about yourself" ice-breaker by being formulaic: Here are my interests and how they influence my work.
I love to read, but miss me with nonfiction. The sword fights and dragonback adventures of high fantasy are where I escape to most often. I grew up with Eragon and Saphira (read the Inheritance Cycle if you haven't) and still hold it near and dear, but lately I can't put down series like The Stormlight Archive, Red Rising, and Mistborn. When I'm not curled up in a lump of blankets, reading with my cats, I'll be out in my yard doing my best Ciscoe Morris impression. I obsess over rock placement, the local bugs and birds drawn to my plants, and the budding leaves on the Japanese Maple my wife and I planted as a timestamp of our wedding. I flit from one hobby to the next, learning how to cook, landscape, tackle carpentry projects, practice interior design, and other random interests that I've since forgotten.
When I'm not found on my small PNW plot of land, I'll likely be hootin' and hollerin' down the local MTB trails with my friends, canoeing down a river for Ski to Sea race prep, or camping, hiking, and adventuring with my wife as we do our best to live life moment by moment. So what does this have to do with photography? How does this influence my work? Well, like my hobbies, I enjoy a little bit of everything.
I shoot in a controlled studio when I need to, but spend as much time as possible gathering lifestyle imagery in the wild. I love to lean into the dark and moody vibes of the PNW with my editing, but am a sucker for pushing the saturation on oranges and greens to remind myself of autumn larches and the desert. I build detailed sets with props and lifelike faux-flora, or I step into the local forest to find the perfect patch of moss to display a product. I infuse imagery with my goofy personality, or keep it crisp and clean to showcase minute details. I take photos of people, places, things, make stop motions of burritos in the water bottle holder of a hip pack, and film videos of my wife in a sasquatch costume to launch new candles. Variety is the spice of life and I like to overseason.
Whether you're looking for a shiny PDP photo of your new invention, a video ad for your socials, or anything in between, I'd love to be the person that gets creative with you.
